Afton staffing plan approval still on hold

The Afton staffing plan is still in its planning stages, at least for a little while longer.

Afton City Council was scheduled to make a motion on the proposed salary increases and the proposal to move Assistant City Administrator Sara Irvine up to the administrator position during its Jan. 18 meeting, however more kinks still need to be worked out.

Earlier this month, City Council reached a consensus that Irvine would be promoted to the city administrator position and Interim City Administrator Ron Moorse would stay on as a consultant for the Old Village infrastructure projects.

However, Council members Peg Nolz and Joe Richter, who make up the personnel committee, said they needed more time to hash out the hours and the pay.

During last Tuesday's meeting, City Council discussed possible options of how the city administrator and consultant model would work.

Council members Randy Nelson and Bill Palmquist said they would be in favor of keeping Moorse on for as long as possible and maintaining the 20 hours per week. Additionally, Nelson said he would be in favor of giving Moore a raise.

"I would like to see Ron stay for a while, personally," Nelson said.

Palmquist said having Moorse around would help a lot with the transition of Irvine to administrator.

"I'd like to keep the team together," he said.

However, Mayor Pat Snyder and Richter said they are at a position where Moorse won't be taking on as many tasks, minus the Old Village, so 20 hours per weeks seems excessive.

"We're going to have to kind of ween ourselves off Ron," Richter said.

The City Council did not make any action during last Tuesday's meeting, however it will meet during a special meeting on Feb. 8 to hash out the specifics.
