Radio Drive roundabout converted to “1x2”

Washington County began work to reduce the roundabout at Radio Drive and Bailey Road to one lane in each direction for east and westbound traffic.

Previously, two through lanes were provided in each direction for eastbound and westbound traffic. Under the new configuration, the right-hand lane on Bailey Road may now be used only for right turns onto Radio Drive. The north and south approaches on Radio Drive will remain unchanged.

The new configuration will make the roundabout design more consistent with the roundabouts being constructed on Woodbury Drive (County Highway 19) and will also help to reduce the most common types of fender-benders at the Radio Drive roundabout, according to county engineers. The new configuration will physically prevent drivers from making left turns from the right-hand lane, which has always been unlawful.

The new configuration will also prevent drivers from attempting to illegally “merge” alongside cross traffic rather than yielding.

Additional work to complete the conversion and remove older pavement markings will continue into early September. More information on this conversion and can be found on Washington County’s “Roundabout U” webpage.
