Afton's government affairs consultant to interview for Farmington job

Afton's government affairs consultant, Ron Moorse, could be leaving the city for Farmington.

Farming City Council has tapped Moorse to be interviewed for the city administrator position there.

Other candidates include Lake Elmo City Administrator Bruce Messelt, Newport City Administrator Brian Anderson and city administrators from Minnesota cities of Chaska, Mendota Heights and Dayton.

Moorse, who began as Afton's interim city administrator in May of 2010, was hired as a consultant at the end of February after then-assistant city administrator Sara Irvine was hired as the city administrator.

Moorse has also previously worked for the cities of Orono, Arden Hills and Roseville.

Over the past three months Moorse has worked on Afton's Comprehensive Plan and facilitated work with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources on grant opportunities.

City Council opted to not renew Moorse's consulting contract earlier this month, but city officials said he could be hired on an as-needed basis.

Moorse said there were a number of things that attracted him to the Farmington job.

"They are looking at really getting organized about making some neat things happen in relation to their downtown," he said. "That was interesting to me.

"Its' got a lot of potential in terms of doing some great things."

Additionally, Moorse said he was drawn to Farmington's size and its location.

Moorse lives in Apple Valley - which neighbors Farmington - with his family.

"I want to take a look at what really makes that community what it is and build on that," he said.

Farmington City Council members plan to select finalists during a June 29 special meeting. Second interviews for the finalists will be held July 11. Both are open to the public.

"I'm really looking forward to going through the process," Moorse said.
