Officials at a popular Woodbury fast-food destination are seeking approval to overhaul the restaurant in hopes of boosting drive-through service.

The current McDonald's location, 1759 Weir Drive, would be demolished and rebuilt under a proposal submitted to the Woodbury Planning Commission.

Commissioners unanimously voted to recommend approval of the request Monday. Woodbury City Council will next consider the proposal at its Jan. 26 meeting, said Associate Planner Eric Searles.

The council will be asked to approve a zoning request that would reduce the number of McDonald's parking stalls from 57 to 47 in order to increase drive-through traffic.

According to a Planning Commission staff report, McDonald's said more than 70 percent of its business comes from the drive-through window. The proposal calls for a double drive-through lane at the restaurant and increased space for so-called "stacking" in the motorist-only line.

Searles said staff is recommending approval of the proposal.

"We believe it's consistent with our comprehensive plan and past development practices," he said. "We are pleased with the site improvements as well as the architectural upgrades they have made from their prototype stores."

Searles said the project is slated to begin this spring and should take about three months. The original building was constructed in 1982.
