Woodbury mayor files for governor’s race
Woodbury Mayor Mary Giuliani Stephens is running for Minnesota governor next year.
Stephens filed for governor as a Republican Monday after previously hinting to RiverTown Multimedia that she was seeking a statewide bid.
Among the dozen Republican candidates who’ve filed ahead of the 2018 race, Stephens is the first-announced female candidate.
She was elected mayor in 2011 after previously serving on the Woodbury City Council. Her term as mayor ends next year.
Stephens joins two other Woodbury Republicans -- Nickolay Bey and Lance Johnson -- who’ve filed to run for governor.
Gov. Mark Dayton's second term ends in early 2019. Nearly 20 candidates have filed to replace him.
Stephens plans to make a public announcement Wednesday in Woodbury.
