Democrats anoint Woodbury's Ward, Hendrikson

The fall stage is set.

Woodbury-area Democrats finalized their House candidates Saturday, March 29, during the Senate District 53 DFL endorsing convention at Tartan High School.

The event solidified the candidacy of Kay Hendrikson, the Woodbury planning commissioner who launched her candidacy for House District 53B in 2013. Hendrikson received the endorsement in a unanimous vote.

“I’ve served many roles over the years, but I’ve never stopped serving our community,” Hendrikson said in a statement. “Most importantly, I know the changes we need to make to provide quality services while making sure we get the best bang for our buck. In my own life, I’ve had to make every penny count, and I will treat your tax dollars with the same respect as I do with my own budget.”

Senate District 53 DFL Chairwoman Alberter Gillespie called Hendrikson “a smart candidate with a wealth of information,” especially in the  realm of health care and education.

“All of her experience in those areas is what really makes her a strong candidate,” Gillespie said.

Hendrikson will contend for the 53B seat with Republican Kelly Fenton, who received her party’s endorsement earlier this month. The seat is being vacated by Rep. Andrea Kieffer, R-Woodbury, who announced last year that she will not seek re-election.

Rep. JoAnn Ward, DFL-Woodbury, was also endorsed on the first ballot.

Ward, a freshman legislator, was elected to the House District 53A seat in 2012 after defeating Republican Pam Cunningham.

This fall Ward will face Woodbury Republican and political newcomer Lukas Czech.

Gillespie predicted that Ward’s voting record and efforts to connect with voters will pay off in November.

“She certainly is going to win this election,” she said.
