County signs agreement to purchase Woodbury's La Lake property

Washington County will provide up to $247,000 in Land and Water Legacy funds to the city of Woodbury to purchase 30 acres along La Lake for preservation.

County Board approved commitment of the funds at its July 23 meeting. The county will receive a conservation easement over the property, and the fee title to 75 feet along Bailey Road to use for roads and trails.

The rest of the money to purchase the land, located in the northwest corner of La Lake immediately north of Woodbury's La Lake open space, will come from the city's parks and open space funds.

The Land Water Legacy funds will go to the city as reimbursement and will not exceed 33 percent of the total project cost or $247,500, whichever is less.

The Land and Water Legacy program is a voter-approved $20 million bond referendum fund to be used to purchase interests in lands to improve water quality of rivers, lakes and streams; protect drinking water resources; purchase parkland; preserve wetlands and woodlands; and protect land along water bodies from development.

County enters into agreement with Springsted for economic development

Washington County Board approved a contract with Springsted, Inc., July 23 for the company to prepare an economic development assessment.

The board identified economic development as a key issue for the county during the recent Washington County strategic planning process. To address the issue, the board decided to engage the services of a consultant to prepare an assessment that looks at the current state of economic development and provide information on the possible expanded roles for the county in economic development.

The $56,700 assessment costs will come from mission-directed budget funds, which are budget savings from previous years that are used for projects to further the county's goals, and contingency funds.
