East Ridge prom Saturday in St. Paul

East Ridge High School's 2013 prom, "Caught in a Fairy Tale," will be Saturday, April 20, from 7:30 p.m. to midnight at the Great Hall in St. Paul.

East Ridge High School students are hoping to get "Caught in a Fairy Tale" this weekend.

This year's prom will be Saturday, April 20, from 7:30 to midnight at the Great Hall in St. Paul. The 2013 theme is "Caught in a Fairy Tale."

"My favorite thing about prom is watching the students enjoy the moment," said East Ridge physical education teacher and prom adviser Bridget Plante.

She said the Prom Committee went through a few different themes - underwater and around the world - before settling on the fairy tale theme.

Plante said this year's theme will take on a different look than when the school used a fairy tale theme for its inaugural prom in 2010.

Whereas the 2010 prom incorporated more of the Disney and "Cinderella" look and feel, this year's prom will incorporate more of the enchanted forest theme.

"The first year was more the bright blues, Disney type of fairytale," she said. "This year it's more like a magical forest."

Plante said the theme will be evident at the Grand March, which will be held earlier in the day at the school's Loft Stage, through a castle and dark colors.

At the actual dance, students will be treated to a chocolate fountain.

A new location

East Ridge's prom will be mixing it up a bit this year with the location since it will be at the Great Hall in downtown St. Paul rather than at the Prom Center in Oakdale where prom has been held for the past two years.

"We just wanted to try something new and move it away from where they live and a place that they see a lot," Plante said. "We wanted to give them an experience that they haven't had before."

The Prom Committee found the Great Hall, which is near Mears Park, thanks to Plante, who used to attend prom there when she was a student at Park High School.

"I just thought it was a beautiful place," she said.

One of the things that makes the Great Hall so unique, Plante said, is that there is an escalator that comes down right on the dance floor and students can often be seen dancing on the escalator.

As memorable as the night of prom is, Plante said students are just as excited about the preparations that go into the event.

The first big event for students is getting asked to prom, Plante said.

"The guys will do something really creative to ask their dates to prom," she said. "It's almost like an engagement."

The high school girls will next post pictures of their prom dresses on Facebook so that everyone at the school knows which one they're wearing with hopes that no one will buy the same one.

Plante said she expects this year's prom to be a memorable night for students.

"It's so magical," she said. "It's magical, it's mystical, and they can put themselves in a different world and escape reality for a little bit and act like a princess."
