District 834 watching peanut butter recalls

On Jan. 12, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and the Minnesota Department of Health announced a product advisory on King Nut brand peanut butter after preliminary laboratory testing indicated the presence of salmonella bacteria in a five-pound container of creamy peanut butter.

The decision was made at that time to discontinue serving all peanut butter and products containing peanut butter in Stillwater Area Public Schools meal programs pending the investigation. The district's primary commitment is always to the health and well-being of the children in our school system so this precautionary step was taken.

On Jan. 20, District 834 was notified that the investigation was being expanded to include a number of food companies that issued product recalls due to concerns that the products may include contaminated peanut butter or peanut butter paste. At that time, no foods containing peanut butter were being served in 834 school meal programs.

Over the past few weeks, District 834 has resumed serving peanut butter products, only after receiving documentation from the Minnesota Department of Education-Food and Nutrition Service or the manufacturer of the products containing peanut butter stating that their products are not included in this investigation.

The district will continue to monitor the investigation and make adjustments in programs if needed.
