Students honored for academic workout

Balloons, medals and trophies were all part of a special celebration last week.

Students from elementary and junior high schools across District 833 met at Bailey Elementary School on April 22 to be rewarded for their achievements in academic triathlons over the year.

More than 200 children were honored in the presentation, which saw a special trophy going to a team from Royal Oaks Elementary School for coming first in the state competition on April 12, and another trophy going to a team from Lake Junior High for coming third at state.

The academic triathlon sees teams of five students working together to complete a series of three challenges on which they are graded: Mind Sprint, Face-Off and Party In A Box.

"Party In A Box is one of my favorite parts," said Molly Hamer, a sixth grader from Middleton Elementary School.

"You have about 40 minutes to create a five-minute skit from the information they give you, and they grade you on how well you follow that information."

South Washington County saw 229 students in grades five to eight making up 42 teams, with 80 coaches taking part in this year's academic triathlon.
