Rad: WHS Cabaret sets 'Totally '80s' theme

Woodbury High School will be celebrating the sounds of the 1980s later this month.

WHS’ 2014 cabaret, “Totally 80s,” will run May 20-22 at the school.

The cabaret is a song-and-dance concert performed by all WHS choirs.

“It’s a lot closer to home for more of the audience because they’ve all grown up in the 80s at some point,” WHS choir director Daryl Timmer said. “There’s actually a lot of flashback going on now.”

The WHS cabaret is split up into two unique performances – the dinner show and the stage show.

During the dinner show, which is at 6:30 p.m., audiences dine on a catered meal by Tinucci’s while enjoying live entertainment by a small group of choir students.

The stage show, which will be at 7:30 p.m. and will feature the entire 170-student choir, will include a completely different set of songs from the dinner show.

The stage show will feature a total of 13 acts.

Some of the artists that will be performed during both the dinner and stage show include: Bon Jovi, Pat Benatar, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Joan Jett and Blondie.

“We cover it all,” Timmer said. “It’s across the board.”

 Choral collaboration

Timmer said the spring cabaret is a great opportunity for students to experience music in a different way because it exposes them to not only different songs, but also dance.

“It lets kids experience music in a different way,” he said. “The mark of a good choir is the ability to do a lot of different styles. It lets them express themselves in a different way.”

Even though the primary focus of the cabaret is the singing, Timmer said the choir students work just as hard to perfect the choreography.

“I’m as tough on the dancing as I am on the singing,” he said. “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing really well.”

Timmer said this year’s choir group has really stepped up to the challenge of cabaret.

“They’re willing to try new things,” he said. “They’re willing to step out of their box.”

Timmer said he expects this year’s cabaret to be a lot of fun for audiences.

“They’re going to take a trip down memory lane in some ways,” he said.
