Search executed at Woodbury hotel after shooting

A woman staying at Woodbury's Extended Stay America was arrested last week after the passenger of the vehicle she was driving was found with multiple gunshot wounds.

According to a news release from the Washington County Sheriff's Office, officers responded May 21 to a report of a medical situation on Highway 5 near Highway 36. The vehicle, driven by a 20-year-old woman, contained passenger Vy Lai Yang, 37, of St. Paul, who was found with "multiple gunshot wounds to the lower part of his body," the release states.

Yang was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, where he was treated and released.

Officers arrested the woman, of St. Paul, on suspicion of drug charges stemming from a search warrant executed at the Extended Stay America in Woodbury, where she was staying. Washington County Sheriff's Cmdr. Brian Mueller said the search was executed in relation to the shooting.

Investigators learned Yang had been shot on Highland Trail just south of Highway 36, where .40-caliber shell casings were discovered, along with blood.

"This wasn't a chance meeting," Mueller said of the shooting.

Two people were arrested in connection with the case - a 34 -year-old St. Paul man and his 37-year-old brother, both of whom were jailed in Stillwater.

Mueller said the younger brother was arrested on Friday, May 31, at Mystic Lake Casino in Prior Lake, Minn. The older brother was released from jail on Friday.

Authorities were not searching for additional suspects, Mueller said.

"We believe the suspect(s) and victim were known to each other and this shooting is the result of a dispute between the two," the release states.

The investigation remains open.
