Red Roof Inn shooting suspect threatens to kill hostages in 911 call transcripts

Demetrius Ballinger told 911 dispatchers he wanted to kill himself, threatened to start a shootout if cops made their way over to the Red Roof Inn and that he had 18 bullets in his 9mm gun, according to transcripts released by the Washington County Dispatchers Office.

"I ain't leaving this hotel unless I'm in a body bag," he said on Friday, Aug. 31.

In one of the three 911 calls he made to dispatchers, he said he had hostages in the room.

Although the audio has not been released, full transcripts obtained by the Bulletin are attached.

Dispatchers also transcribed four open line calls, however, they said they were difficult to make out and were filled with inaudible text.

Ballinger sounded suicidal and frustrated, while the dispatcher repeatedly said he was trying to understand the situation.

"They better not come here. If they come here, there's going to be a shootout and I'm taking three people with me that I got right now. Cause I have 18" Ballinger said.

"You have 18 what?" asked the dispatcher.

"Bullets," answered Ballinger.

The dispatcher asked him how many people he had in the hotel room. Ballinger then counted nine.

Although at first he told the dispatcher he didn't have a family to go home to, he later said he had a 4-year-old son and a girlfriend he was supposed to marry.

"No my wife not here. Just some of, some kids I guess. The oldest is what. How old are you?"

One of the hostages said 16.

"What the (expletive) you said 19," he said.

Ballinger wanted to make sure the police were not going to the hotel room and threatened to shoot one of the hostages if they did.

"You're coming here?" he asked.

"No. We're not coming in. You control the situation in there. OK," the dispatcher responded.

"No, you all going to be coming in? How about if I take out one right now so you'll know (Inaudible)" Ballinger said.

"No, nobody, nobody's coming in OK?" answered the dispatcher.

"Nobody's coming in. I didn't say we're coming in. Nobody's coming in ah OK? They. I mean you, you understand the reality. The police are out there but nobody's coming in. OK?"

A transcript from the second 911 call state Ballinger was trying to reach "Chris" who was trying to call him.

The dispatcher later asked if anyone in the room was hurt.

"Nope not yet," Ballinger said.

"Not yet? What does that mean?" asked the dispatcher.

"I'm going to make (them) watch me shoot my (expletive) head," he said.

Ballinger is charged with 27 felony counts in connection with the incident, where he allegedly robbed the teens in the room and raped four minors. He made two court appearances where bail was set at $1 million.

Ballinger was arrested following a four-hour standoff with police at the Red Roof Inn in Woodbury. He was also charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting one of the hostages, 19-year-old Mark Henderson.
