Man sentenced for fleeing Woodbury police

A 46-year-old man was sentenced March 11 in Washington County District Court for fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle and domestic assault charges relating to a Feb. 19, 2010 incident.

Jerry Jay Langner, of Lake Elmo, was ordered to serve 365 days in jail and pay a $3,000 fine suspended for three years with conditions.

The charges stem from an incident where Washington County dispatchers received a report that a 62-year-old woman had been assaulted at a Lake Elmo residence.

Deputies responded to the residence, but while on the way, they received word that the person who allegedly assaulted the woman left the home and was going southbound on Lake Elmo Avenue.

Police found the woman holding a bloody cloth over her left ear. There was also blood around her mouth. The woman said her husband, Langner, struck her several times in the head after they fought over the use of a telephone. She said he "went ballistic" when she made a long distance phone call from their home phone, according to the criminal complaint.

The woman said he punched her seven to eight times with a closed fist to her head, mouth and cheek.

The victim told police she thought Langner was headed to Minneapolis to his employer's home in a Kia vehicle. The sheriff's office requested the Woodbury Police Department's help in an attempt to locate Langner.

Woodbury police located the Kia. Langner pulled over onto the shoulder briefly before he accelerated back onto the roadway, court documents state.

A squad car and an unmarked vehicle pursued the Kia with emergency lights activated and police were eventually able to stop the car near Woodbury Drive and Bailey Road.

Langner was then arrested on a charge of fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle.
