Firefighters worked to extinguish multiple grass fires that broke out Wednesday on the westbound shoulder of Interstate 94 between Manning Avenue and County Highway 19 in Lake Elmo.

The fire, which started just before 2 p.m., drew responses from multiple departments, including Woodbury and the Lower St. Croix Valley Fire Department.

Lake Elmo Fire Chief Greg Malmquist said the multi-department response was in large part due to concerns about traffic visibility on the interstate.

“That was our biggest concern because there was smoke blowing across the freeway,” he said.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined and came as somewhat of a surprise for Malmquist because of recent precipitations and fields that have "greened up," he said

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has not issued a fire restriction for the area.

“It could’ve been a semi with hot brakes. Who knows?” Malmquist said.

Firefighters extinguished the fires within an hour.
