James Miller, 72, killed his wife before he hung himself last week.

The victim, 85-year-old Beverly Miller, is believed to have died of blunt force trauma to the head, according to a Woodbury Public Safety investigation and the preliminary results of a Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office autopsy.

The police department released the names of the victims and the results of the preliminary autopsy late Tuesday, after the deadlines for the May 25 print edition of the Woodbury Bulletin.

While police were investigating a suspected murder-suicide Friday, May 20, in the 8800 block of Spring View Alcove in Woodbury, officers learned that family and the property manager last heard from the couple five days earlier.

The Millers were private people, but concern was piqued by the unusual number of newspapers piling up near the front door. That prompted a call for police to check the welfare of the couple, who had been married more than 40 years and generated no calls for domestic issues, only a few medical situations, police said.

Police were called at 2:50 p.m. May 20, and officers broke a front window to enter the residence at 4 p.m., when the senior citizens were found dead in their respective bedrooms on the second story. They'd been Woodbury residents for 15-plus years, according to Woodbury Public Information Officer Michelle Okada said.
