Accused stalker allegedly bashed car with log

A man with a history of domestic offense-related convictions faces new charges after allegedly stalking a Woodbury woman and attacking her vehicle with a log.

Michael James Hughes, 38, was charged July 14 with one count of stalking, a felony that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

According to a criminal complaint:

Hughes was at the Woodbury woman’s Garbe Avenue home on July 13 when he was asked to leave at about 3 a.m. The woman had a domestic abuse no-contact order against Hughes that prevented him from contacting her or her children.

The Circle Pines, Minn., man eventually left after arguing with the woman, then went outside, where he struck her vehicle with a log and a folding chair. Hughes then rammed his vehicle into the woman’s before leaving.

He was discovered back in the home at about 5 a.m., when the woman’s mother was awakened and found Hughes sleeping in a bunk bed. The woman said prior incidents of violence involving Hughes dissuaded her from calling police while he was in the home.

Police eventually met with the woman, who learned from a neighbor that he had again returned to the home. Police found him hiding in a basement closet.

The complaint states that after being arrested, Hughes called the woman five times in 30 minutes from jail. During one call, Hughes allegedly asked the woman “how could you do this?” and told her to go to court the next day to “fix the situation.”

According to Minnesota court records, Hughes was convicted of felony pattern of conduct-stalking in 2012 and of violating a harassing-restraining order in 2007.

Hughes was ordered to be held on $20,000 conditional bond or $50,000 unconditional bond at his July 15 arraignment. He made his first court appearance on Wednesday, July 30.
