Bizarre expiration date leads to criminal charges for Woodbury shopper

Red flags went up in a Woodbury store after a woman presented a driver’s license purporting it wouldn’t expire for more than 50 years.

The woman, who was attempting to buy more than $500 worth of merchandise from Kohl’s, was later arrested and charged with credit card fraud.

Derrah Trechell Tyler, 23, was charged with one count of felony financial card fraud and one count of giving police a false name, a misdemeanor.

According to a criminal complaint:

Tyler went to buy merchandise on Aug. 27 at the store, where workers spotted her driver’s license, which purported to be from Arizona with an expiration date of the year 2071. Police were alerted to the suspicious purchase, tracked down Tyler’s vehicle in traffic and questioned her.

She first gave a false name and date of birth. Officers said her driver’s license appeared to be forged “particularly because the expiration date was for 9/28/2071,” the complaint states.

Tyler was later arrested after her actual identity was discovered, thanks to a prescription bottle found in her car issued to Derrah Tyler.

An inquiry with the credit card company revealed the account had been established by a person in Kansas; police spoke with the cardholder, who said she didn’t know Tyler, nor did she know her account came to be associated with “Destiny Thomas.”

Other possibly fraudulent credit cards were found in Tyler’s car, the complaint states.  Tyler, who lists a Detroit address, but told police she is homeless, later admitted trying to buy the Kohl’s merchandise fraudulently.
