'Freeziac' yogurt shop moving into former Blockbuster location in Woodbury's City Centre East
A new yogurt shop will soon move into the former Blockbuster store in Woodbury.
Freeziac, a locally owned and Minnesota based frozen yogurt shop, is slated to open July 9.
"We're not a franchise," owner Joanne Mallon emphasized.
Freeziac first opened three years ago in Eden Prairie. The business grew to open locations at the Mall of America, Maple Grove, Plymouth and Burnsville.
The Woodbury store will be the biggest with 42 seats.
John and Joanne Mallon of Minneapolis decided to partner with Randy and Janel Ketteler Carmody of Woodbury to open Freeziac and expand it into the suburbs.
"My husband thought it was a great concept," Joanne Mallon said.
The frozen yogurt business is big on the west coast, so John and Randy decided to visit California to see how it's done where it's most popular.
They liked the idea of paying by the ounce and choosing the toppings.
"You can be really healthy with frozen yogurt or you can be really decadent and load it up with chocolate and candy," Joanne Mallon said.
Freeziac is decorated with a blue and white theme, with seats and booths around the yogurt and topping stations.
Each suburban store has photography that represents the city. The business owners plan to hang up photos of Woodbury landmarks at their newest Freeziac store.
"It's something that brings it back to the city," Joanne Mallon said. "We're very local and community-minded."
She said there will also be board games and a "safe environment" for all ages to make Freeziac a fun hangout place.
Customers pay by the ounce and can choose from Freeziac's 10 different flavors of frozen yogurt in addition to the various toppings, which include fresh fruit, mango beads and brownie bites.
The new Woodbury location will be the first to move into the former Blockbuster at City Centre East, which is being torn up and remodeled to accommodate for three new businesses.
"I think it's going to bring some vibrancy to that area," Joanne Mallon said.
