'Cop on Top' nets $130,000 for Special Olympics Minnesota

The second annual "Cop on Top," a law enforcement torch run event for Special Olympics Minnesota, raised $130,000 for the organization.

From June 6 to 8, law enforcement personnel camped out on the roofs of all 30 metro-area Rainbow Foods stores until friends, colleagues and customers raised enough money for them to reach their fundraising goal, subsequently giving them permission to abandon their roof top camping spots.

Throughout the 48 hours, the officers collected donations from customers at the cash register.

A highlight each year is the competition that ensues between officers who do everything they can to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics.

At many stores, officers brought in the local fire engine to impress local crowds. In some cases, officers rode on motorcycles.

One of the most exciting events happened at the Rainbow in Woodbury as the Minnesota State Patrol landed its helicopter right in the Rainbow parking lot.

Officers at the Woodbury Rainbow also provided fingerprinting for children.

Cheri Dexter, from the Washington County Sheriff's Department, was the camper atop the Woodbury store and the one spearheading all the excitement.

Cop on Top event was presented by Rainbow Foods, along with WCCO Radio, 102.9 LiteFM, and 104.1 Jack FM.

It is part of the law enforcement torch run's program, a grassroots campaign of law enforcement representatives worldwide, who for 26 years, have generated funds for and created awareness of Special Olympics programs in their areas.
