Semi rolls near U.S. 61
A semitrailer carrying 43,000 pounds of scrap metal rolled Monday morning on Bailey Road near U.S. 61 in Newport, affecting traffic for several hours.
Newport firefighters, St. Paul police, the Washington County Sheriff's Office and the State Patrol responded to the rollover shortly before 10 a.m. The truck rolled on the right side of Bailey Road as it curves near the entrance ramp to northbound U.S. 61. The driver, William Baldwin, had sped up while attempting to change lanes, Newport Fire Chief Steve Wiley said.
The scrap metal load shifted and came free from cardboard totes. It was removed from the trailer with a front-end loader, Wiley said.
Baldwin did not appear to be injured and was talking with police and tow truck operators. The truck is owned by Oberg Freight Co. of Fort Dodge, Iowa.
The semitrailer was cleared after 2 p.m.
