Traffic snarled through Woodbury and beyond Tuesday after a bus fire along Interstate 94 cast a black column of smoke into the afternoon sky.

No children were on the District 622 bus at the time of the fire, said Minnesota State Patrol Lt. Eric Roeske. The driver escaped without injury, Roeske added.

The call for service was received at 3:02 p.m. Roeske said it wasn't clear when the bus caught fire, but noted that fire investigators were looking into the cause.

The charred bus came to a rest in the off ramp at Century Avenue from eastbound I-94.

District 622 serves Maplewood, Oakdale, North St. Paul and a portion of Woodbury.
