Women of Today organization launches chapter in Woodbury

A national organization now has a chapter in Woodbury for those who are looking to volunteer in various community service projects.

Women of Today began work with a fundraiser for Clutch for Cause, which gives financial assistance to single parents, earlier this month.

The new organization will meet the second Monday of every month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Heritage Park Community Center to discuss upcoming projects.

So far the group has 11 members who will be volunteering at Relay for Life South Washington County, said one of the founding members, Jacquie Urquia.

But what's good about Women of Today, she said, is there are no limits to what community service project the women can to be involved in.

"The nice part about Women of Today is we're able to help the community in so many different ways," she added.

Women of Today has chapters all across the state and the nation, but the closest ones to Woodbury are in Stillwater and Eagan.

Average memberships range from 20 to 40 in each group, but there are chapters who have about 60 members, Urquia said.

"We're really just looking for people with a desire to give back to the community they live in and those who have a heart for helping people," she added.

When Urquia began looking into starting a community service group in Woodbury, she said she liked the principles and values that Women of Today embraces.

She did the research and met with other members from other chapters five months ago to start Women of Today in Woodbury at the beginning of May.

The organization in fact had a local chapter about five years ago, but closed when all members went to serve on a different board.

Women of Today is open to everyone over the age of 18. Though it's geared toward women who want to serve in their communities, men are welcome as well.

"I just thought women would have like-minded ideas, we would be able to serve in so many different ways," Urquia said.
