Council candidate profile: David Dobson

For many, running for a seat on the Woodbury City Council might be a chance to make a difference. For David Dobson, he just wants to help keep Woodbury on its current path.

"In a lot of cases people are running because they want to change something, but I don't think there's anything broken in Woodbury -- don't fix something that's not broken," Dobson said. "We need to continue to grow in the direction we've been going."

Dobson, 64, moved to Woodbury two years ago after having lived out of state for several years.

Since Dobson and his wife moved to Woodbury, they have made a life for themselves. Dobson's wife works as a nurse at Woodwinds Health Campus.

"We just fell in love with the city," he said. "And now seemed like a good time in my life to do something for the community."

Dobson said he brings with him a master's degree in business, experience as a lieutenant colonel with the United States Air Force and experience in both big and small business.

"I bring with me honesty, integrity and sound business making," he said. "I understand business, I understand budgets."

Dobson said he does not have any particular issues that he is concerned with for the city, however he said he would like to look into possibly developing a downtown area.

"The one thing that Woodbury doesn't have is a real downtown or city centre," he said. "But, the ship may have sailed on that, it may be too late."

One of the biggest tasks facing a city council member is taxes and budget cuts. Dobson said if he had to make cuts, he would look at possibly cutting improvement projects, staffing and even wages.

Dobson said he hopes he can help keep Woodbury going forward.

"We need to continue doing those things to make this a great place to live," he said.
