Will I-94 become the Gateway Corridor?

How does "Gateway Corridor" sound?

A public relations firm is recommending the I-94 Corridor, from St. Paul east into Wisconsin, be renamed the Gateway Corridor.

Gateway Corridor was the suggested pick from among five possible names for the east-metro stretch of Interstate 94.

A possible name change is part of a larger marketing plan for the transportation corridor. Local officials who serve on the I-94 Corridor Commission are planning a study of transit options on I-94 in the eastern Twin Cities and are beginning to lobby for state and federal funding for road and transit improvements along the freeway.

The proposed name is fitting for the corridor, which links two states and encompasses urban, suburban and rural areas, Minneapolis-based Tunheim Partners wrote in a letter to the commission.

"The Gateway Corridor can represent numerous points of view regarding the direction of (the) corridor," the firm said. "It can serve as a gateway to Minnesota or Wisconsin. It can also serve as a gateway to the Twin Cities, St. Paul, or the eastern suburbs. The corridor is the gateway to whatever destination to desire."

The commission is expected to consider the recommendation at its upcoming meeting. Commissioners will meet at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, July 8 at Woodbury City Hall.

The five suggested corridor names were Gateway, Capital City, Eastern Valley Creek and I-94. Tunheim Partners sought feedback from east-metro stakeholders and a western Wisconsin transportation commission.
