Mukhopadhay goes on to international competition

Prithwis Mukhopadhay, an 11th grade student at Woodbury High School, has been named one of two finalists in the sanofi-aventis International BioGENEius Challenge, after competing March 6 at the Midwest regional competition at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. The competition included students from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

The Challenge is a competition for high school students who demonstrate an exemplary understanding of biotechnology through science research projects.

His project is titled "Food Additive or Carcinogen? Carrageenan Inhibits ASB Activity and Induces Cell Invasion Involving RhoA Activation and MMP-9 Secretion."

He now advances to international competition May 3 - 4 at the 2010 Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) International Convention in Chicago.

According to information provided by the Biotechnology Instiute, the convention is the largest global event for the biotechnology industry, drawing an estimated 14,000 to 20,000 attendees each year.
