UPDATED: Twelve District 833 school buses fail to start due to cold weather, 11 bus routes affected

District 833 school buses became victims of frigid temperatures Monday morning, Jan. 4, when 12 of its school buses failed to start after sitting dormant since Dec. 22. However, the district was only short five buses since the district has seven backup buses.

As a result of the start up failures, 11 bus routes were affected.

The 11 bus routes affected were - #327A at East Ridge High School, #223 at Lake Middle School, #246 and #250 at Oltman Middle School,#101 at Armstrong Elementary, #163 at Hillside Elementary, #140 at Royal Oaks Elementary, #702 and #705 at Nuevas Fronteras, #803 at Transfiguration and #802 at Valley Crossing Community School.

District 833 communications director Barb Brown said that bus drivers are out at 4 a.m. trying to get buses, which are stored both outdoors and indoors, started up.

District 833 Department of Transportation began contacting families on the affected routes as soon as possible to let them know of the issues and encourage parents to take their students to school if possible, Brown said.

Brown said that a total of 482 students are included on the 11 routes - 12 students were reported to be absent at the nine schools because of the missing buses.

End of the day transportation was provided.
