Xcel restores power for 16,000 customers after outage
Xcel Energy restored power to some 16,000 customers in western Woodbury and surrounding areas Friday afternoon after an outage that lasted about three hours.
The power outage was reported shortly after 11:30 a.m. after a transformer at a nearby Xcel Energy substation failed, said Xcel spokeswoman Mary Sandock.
At about 2:15 p.m. power was restored to the affected areas in Woodbury, Maplewood, St. Paul, Oakdale and Landfall near I-494, Sandock said.
Many residents called the Woodbury Public Safety Department to report the outage, said spokeswoman Kim Peterson.
The outage occurred when repair crews were working on one of two transformers at a substation in the area when the other transformer failed. Workers then had to restore the transformer they were working on to get the power back online for customers, Sandock said.
