County veterans office notice being sent to service-connected disabled veterans

The Washington County Veterans Office would like to inform all service-connected disabled veterans (rated 70-100 percent) living in Washington County that a letter verifying their disability will be mailed to them by the Veterans Administration on or about May 1.

This letter is needed to apply or reapply for the Disabled Veteran's Property Tax Exclusion program. This letter informs them that they are entitled to receive a "Disabled Veterans Homestead Market Value Exclusion" if they own their own home.

The Disabled Veteran's Property Tax Exclusion must be applied for each year unless a veteran has a 100 percent and permanent disability.

All reapplications or initial applications must be received by Washington County before July 1, 2009, to be eligible for the benefit for taxes payable in 2010.

This benefit for disabled veterans has two different levels of market value exclusions.

• There is a $150,000 market value exclusion for veterans rated at 70 to 100 percent disabled.

• There is a $300,000 market value exclusion for veterans rated at 100 percent permanently disabled.

In addition, the Washington County Department of Property Records and Taxpayer Services has mailed a letter with an application form, return envelope and fact sheet to all veteran's receiving the exclusion for taxes payable in 2009.

Application forms may be mailed back to the county using the return envelope or may be dropped off at the county offices in Stillwater (Valley Ridge Mall location), the Washington County Headwaters Service Center in Forest Lake, the Washington County Service Center in Woodbury or the Washington County South Service Center in Cottage Grove.

Veterans with questions related to the application forms should call (651) 430-6110.
