Board tours construction underway at East Ridge

On Thursday, April 9, the District 833 school board and administrators toured East Ridge High School in Woodbury, currently under construction and slated to open this fall.

Here's a snapshot of the work that's underway at the site:

• East Ridge athletic fields will be ready when school opens in the fall.

• The school is expected to be completed between June 15 and mid-July.

• Installation of the artificial surface field for soccer and football begins this week.

• Even though the school won't be finished for three months, wall clocks are up and running.

• The color scheme for the new school is "soothing and welcoming," according to architect Paul Youngquist. Colors such as pale golden yellow, one of the school colors, tan and brown mimic those found in nature, he said.

• There will be computerized white boards in every classroom. Ceiling projectors project laptop computer images onto white boards and teachers manipulate them with styluses.

• Flooring in stairways, hallways and high traffic areas is terrazzo tile.

• Although the new school is larger in square footage than Park and Woodbury high schools, it will not require more custodians than those at the two older schools. According to John Doth, director of facilities, East Ridge's new flooring needs little maintenance.

The school board and 833 administrators also toured Park High School in Cottage Grove, where a major remodel is underway.
