WJHS principal Roos named East Ridge High assistant principal
Students who graduate from Woodbury Junior High this year and move on to East Ridge High will see a familiar administrator at their new school next year.
Current WJHS principal Dennis Roos is joining the ERHS team as the second assistant principal. He will join Matt Kraft, the other East Ridge assistant principal, starting July 1.
"I look at this position as a head coach job," he said. "But I don't necessarily want to leave Woodbury."
Roos said his decision to move to East Ridge was influenced by District 833's plan to transform Woodbury Junior High into a middle school. He wouldn't be able to see it through the entire transition since he's not far from retirement.
He said his departure from WJHS at this time will pave the way to find a replacement who can see it through the complete transition.
Now in his tenth year as WJHS principa,l Roos was formerly the principal at Blooming Prairie High School and held positions at North Branch and New Ulm Catholic Schools in Minnesota.
He is a native of Kansas and received his bachelors degree from Ft. Hays State (KS) in history and physical education. Before moving to Minnesota, he taught in the Topeka Public Schools District.
Roos completed his masters degree and administrative licensure at St. Cloud State.
Roos said it is somewhat bittersweet to leave Woodbury Junior High since he's been there for the past decade.
"It has been a rewarding experience working with some great kids and an excellent staff," Roos said. "I have had the unique opportunity to hire a good number of the staff. I have watched them grow into excellent teachers and people... I will always look at my time at WJHS with pleasure and pride."
Roos added he enjoys the prospect of facing the unexpected at his new educational posting.
"...That's one thing that I really like about this job," he said. "I'm looking forward to a new challenge at East Ridge High School. I have the greatest respect for Aaron Harper (ERHS principal) and the direction that he wants to take East Ridge. I'm looking forward to being a part of that team."
