Another national retailer has announced it will close a store in Woodbury.

Last Friday, Cost Plus officials revealed it closing 26 of its World Market stores nationwide.

Cost Plus corporate officials declined to say which stores will be closing, but employees at the Tamarack Village location in Woodbury confirmed that all six World Market locations in Minnesota are slated to close within the month or whenever the in-store merchandise is sold.

The World Market at Tamarack Village opened in 2002 in the retail space previously occupied by Home Place, according to city of Woodbury records. The store markets itself as a place to purchase items from around the world. It also operates a wine and beer shop at the Tamarack Village location.

On Monday, the store front of the Tamarack Village location was plastered with several signs indicating all items were on clearance and "Everything must go."

In its announcement Friday, Cost Plus officials said slow holiday season sales were factored into the decision to close 26 of 296 World Market locations across the country.

"While we continued to experience positive foot traffic trends in December, we were disappointed with our holiday sales results and larger than anticipated markdowns resulting from the tough economic climate and exceptionally poor weather conditions in certain geographic areas," said Cost Plus president and chief executive officer Barry Feld, via press release.

Same store sales for the fiscal month of December decreased 4.3 percent compared to a decrease of 3.2 percent last year, the press release stated.

Cost Plus World Market locations in Minnesota include: Woodbury, Minnetonka, Maple Grove, Rochester, Bloomington and Roseville.

Last month, national office supply chain Office Depot announced it planned to include its Woodbury Village location among a list 112 store closings nationwide.

Woodbury Village and Tamarack Village are owned by Robert Muir Companies.
