Community service workers get into fight

A fight broke out between two members of a work crew being supervised by the state department of corrections Tuesday, Aug. 5.

The crew was performing community service work at Edgewater Park near Colby Lake in Woodbury. At around 11 a.m., witnesses reported two workers were involved in a physical altercation.

An ambulance responded to the scene and took one of the crew members to a nearby hospital, Woodbury Public Safety officials confirmed.

Woodbury Public Safety Director Lee Vague said it didn't appear there were any serious injuries in the altercation.

"Ultimately, these guys who were working on this blew it," Vague said. "These community service crews are usually made up of inmates who can prove that they won't cause trouble, and if they do, there probably isn't a second chance."

The city on occasion has contracted with the state department of corrections and Washington County Sheriff's Office to bring out crews to work on community service projects such as buckthorn removal.

Vague said the work crews are well-supervised and the recent incident is not common in Woodbury.

"It's the first time in my 18 years here that I've ever heard of a problem with these work crews," he said. "It's not something that happens often at all."
