Raptors, bird-banding at parks

Washington County Parks will host free "Campfire" programs Saturday, July 19, at 7:15 p.m. in the campground amphitheaters at Lake Elmo Park Reserve and St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park. A $5 vehicle fee will be charged at the entrance to the parks for any vehicles not displaying a current park pass.

Lake Elmo Park Reserve, 1515 Keats Avenue North, Lake Elmo, will host a naturalist from the Wildlife Science Center who will present a program on raptors with "a comprehensive look at the remarkable range of adaptations and life histories displayed by these incredible predators."

The program features a close-up look at a bird of prey and raptor artifacts. The park is located at the intersection of County Road 19 and County Road 10, one mile north of Interstate 94.

The director of the Carpenter St. Croix Valley Nature Center, a licensed bird bander, will present the campfire program "Bird Banding" at St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park, 10191 St. Croix Trail South, Hastings. During the program he'll set up devices to capture local songbirds, study them, mark them, and release them back into the forest.

He'll also explain, "why these birds are important and what they are telling us." St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park is located along the St. Croix River on County Road 21, between County Road 76 and County Road 78 in Denmark Township.
