WPSD to assist RNC

The Woodbury Public Safety Department will be lending a hand to the Republican National Convention in September.

The Woodbury City Council will vote at its July 9 meeting on a proposed joint powers agreement with city of St. Paul that would assign 15 Woodbury police officers and two reserve officers to assist with the convention in downtown St. Paul.

According to a staff report on the proposal, all salaries and benefits for the patrol officers on duty will be paid for by the RNC at the overtime rate.

In total, more than 4,000 law enforcement officers are expected to staff the event, with the majority coming from St. Paul, Minneapolis and Bloomington police departments and Hennepin and Ramsey county sheriff's offices. About 1,500 officers will come from Woodbury and other municipalities around the metro area.

Woodbury officers would work together as a team and be responsible for securing a portion of the Xcel Energy Center or the transportation routes to and from the venue, the report stated.

Ten officers are expected to be assigned foot patrol and will work alongside officers from Cottage Grove, Newport, St. Paul Park, Bayport and Stillwater.

Five Woodbury bike patrol officers will receive additional training and be assigned to a bike patrol team. Bike patrol officers will patrol the outside of the Xcel Energy Center. Reserve officers will supplement sworn officer presence, the report stated.
