City votes to sign onto Habitat resolution

Habitat for Humanity builds homes in Woodbury -- a lot of them.

The non-profit organization, which aims to increase home ownership among lower-income families, has put up more than 50 new affordable homes in Woodbury in the last two decades, making the eastern suburb the third largest concentration of Habitat Homes in the Twin Cities, trailing only Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Last week the Woodbury City Council further bolstered the city's relationship with the Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity when it voted to sign onto a resolution supporting the organization's efforts to seek $1.5 million in funds from the state Legislature.

Two-thirds of the requested aid would go to strategic funding and one third would go to rehabilitation aid for home foreclosures, which have increased in the Twin Cities in the last few years.

The Woodbury City Council resolution states that the city supports Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity in its quest for the funding.

Last year, more than a dozen new Habitat homes opened in Woodbury.
