Woodbury cougar sighting comes up empty

A possible cougar sighting last week in Woodbury was unfounded, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

A resident in the 8000 block of Pheasant Run Road called at 12:57 p.m. Thursday, July 18, to report a cougar sighting.

Vuthy Tril, a DNR conservation officer, responded to the call. He did not locate the animal and did not find any tracks indicating it might have been a cougar.

Tril said it’s not implausible for a cougar to be spotted in the area, however, noting that he responded last year to a sighting in St. Paul and a separate sighting several years ago in Afton.

People who encounter cougars should bring small children and pets inside, Tril said.

“These animals are opportunistic,” he said. “If they are confronted, they will attack you.”
