Grandma's Restaurant Co. Inc. now can boast that its chicken wild rice soup is "the official soup of the Minnesota Wild."

Brian Daugherty, the company's president, estimates the endorsement deal took about $20,000 to put together.

"Hockey season and soup season go hand in hand," Daugherty said.

The restaurant chain launched its frozen soup line three years ago, and it has been gaining traction in the grocery market lately, Daugherty said. He added that since Cub Foods made the switch to serving Grandma's soup at delis in its Minnesota stores earlier this year, its statewide soup sales are up 250 percent.

Daugherty used that experience to help convince the Minnesota Wild to offer Grandma's soups for sale at the Xcel Energy Center this season and also was successful in obtaining an endorsement deal.

Grandma's soon will embark on an ambitious marketing campaign to promote its association with the National Hockey League team. As part of this initiative, Daugherty said the company will run a sweepstakes drawing, offering participants an opportunity to win "a sweet wild night." Winners will receive a pair of tickets to a Wild game and a night's lodging at the Embassy Suites. To enter, go to
