Minn lawmaker says Bush veto will hurt GOP

U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson said his fellow Democrats would get a boost at the polls next year if President Bush follows through with his threatened veto of agriculture legislation.

Peterson, the veteran congressman from Detroit Lakes who is House agriculture committee chairman, told a Farm Journal audience last week in Washington that a veto would hurt Republican candidates in farm states during the 2008 election cycle.

"If you want to turn the whole center of the country blue, that's a good start," he said.

Peterson added that he wants to reach agreement with the Bush administration on new agriculture policy.
