Woodbury Islamic society acquires land in Afton

Members of the Islamic Society of Woodbury-East Metro will be celebrating the acquisition of a land purchase this weekend.

The ISW-EM purchased a 30-acre parcel in the 12000 block of Hudson Road in Afton. Kaleel Ahmed, a founder of the local Islamic society, said the purchase went through Thursday, Sept. 12, for the site, which is in between Manning and Neal avenues just south of Interstate 94.

The use for the site remains undefined, Ahmed said, other than “for future use.”

“There is no blueprint, no plan,” he said, adding that no time table is in place.

Afton City Administrator Ron Moorse said no permit or plans have been submitted to the city. The site is currently zoned rural residential and any construction would require a conditional-use permit, but would likely not need to be re-zoned, Moorse said.

The city would begin with a permit review before submitting plans to the Afton Planning Commission, he said.

A private event will be held on Saturday in celebration of the acquisition, Ahmed said.
