Navigating the 'slippery slope' at Afton Alps

East Ridge High School students were all smiles Feb. 4 when the Link Crew leaders took their ninth-grade counterparts to Afton Alps for some tubing time

East Ridge High School Link crew leaders thought of a good way to bond with their freshmen: a little snow tubing action at nearby Afton Alps.

The Link Crew leaders and their ninth grade counterparts took a field trip to the ski area Thursday, Feb. 4.

"We thought this would be a great way for the students to build a connection with the upper classmen," said Link Crew advisor and East Ridge Social Studies teacher Kelly Reagan.

Link Crew is an organization where upper classmen are paired with freshmen students to help acquaint them with high school and get them involved.

"We've found that if students fall through the cracks now, they will likely have bad experiences later on," Reagan said.

In addition to having some fun on the slope, the students also participated in some team building activities inside the chalet where they discussed status positions.

"We want them to understand that nobody is better than anybody else," Reagan said.

Reagan said the field trip to Afton Alps was a hit with all who participated.

"Everyone had a great time," she said. "There was a lot of squeals down the hill."
