Country Mile a Woodbury Days tradition

Woodbury Days wouldn’t be the same without out it.

For the 32nd straight year, the Woodbury Country Mile will take place on the streets of Woodbury.

The race, which always takes place prior to the Twin Cities Marathon and draws roughly 1,000 runners each year, consists of four separate running events: The half marathon, the 5K run/walk, the tot trot, and the kids 1-mile fun run. Funds raised from the race benefit the Woodbury Chamber of Commerce.

The Country Mile was the brainchild of Gail Boland in the 1980s in hopes of promoting the city of Woodbury.

The Woodbury Country Mile will take place on Saturday, Aug. 25, starting at 7 a.m. The event begins at Woodbury Lakes Lifestyle Center located at 9000 Hudson Road, Woodbury. The race utilizes paved path and road surfaces. The race takes place between the boundaries of Radio Drive, St. John‘ s Drive, I-94 and Bailey Road. For the half marathon, splits will be read at the one mile and the halfway point. Water stops are also located throughout the course.

Register for the race through the chamber’s website at Race packets for pre-registered participants can be picked up on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sheraton Hotel on Bielenberg Drive in Woodbury. In addition, runners can register as early as 6 a.m. at Sam’s Club the day of the race. All races occur rain or shine.

The Country Mile is preceded by the Woodbury Days sand volleyball tournament, a one-day-only event put on by the Minnesota Recreation and Park Association as part of their Four Summer Spiketacular.

The Woodbury Days tournament will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24 at Ojibway Park.
