The South Washington County Thunderbolts — a mix of student-athletes from East Ridge, Park and Woodbury high schools — finished in sixth place at the 2012 State Adapted Soccer Tournament, held Nov. 16-17 at Stillwater Area High School.
After reaching its first-ever section soccer final last year, the New Life Academy girls soccer team reached the Section 4A championship game for a second-straight year last week, only to be done in by South St. Paul once again.
When longtime Thunderbolts head coach Denny Larson called it quits, he was nervous about who would take the reins of a program he’d spent 15 years running. However, he was relieved when John Culbertson got the call.
There wasn’t much East Ridge could do to slow down a determined and tenacious Stillwater Tuesday night as the Ponies ran away with the Section 4AA championship with a dominant 6-0 victory over East Ridge to secure a spot in the state tournament.
East Ridge secured a spot in the Section 4AA title game with a 2-0 win Saturday over No. 1-ranked North St. Paul in North St. Paul. The upset win came just days after East Ridge beat rival Woodbury for the first time ever in the opening round of playoffs and put the Raptors a win away from the state tournament.
