Letter tot the editor: Leaving County Board with thanks and a smile
Ted Geisel, more commonly known as Dr. Seuss, once wrote: “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” Well, I have a lot to smile about as my service on the Washington County Board concludes.

Viewpoint: Should you lawyer up?
Judges hear some interesting reasons as to why people aren’t represented by lawyers: “I’ve seen it on TV,” or “My cousin did his own case and did fine,” or “How hard could it be?”

VIEWPOINT: Beginning to look a lot like....
Christmas is a mere two weeks from yesterday! Yikes – are you ready? It seems like, even though we had an extra week to prepare, the festive season still snuck up on us. Have you mailed all your cards and gifts, made a few dozen cookies, sent out the invitations for your holiday gala and purchased a new dress for the company party? If not, you have two more weekends to get everything “all buttoned up,” which is the terminology our new daughter-in-law uses.

Letter to the editor: City embarking on bad development plan
Although I was disappointed by the plans that the City Council has pushed through for development of agricultural land in Woodbury, I was not surprised. The city of Woodbury has welcomed the development of strip malls and homogeneous single-lot housing for years, at the detriment of its remaining greenfields.

VIEWPOINT: Outlining cold-weather decisions
My Thanksgiving break was spent enjoying time with family, getting caught up on home projects, beginning our holiday shopping, and watching a few movies and football games. It was also a time for updating ski equipment, getting the sleds down from the attic, and watching the snow begin to gather on the landscape. Whether we like it or not, these are all signs that cold weather is arriving and with it the possibility of inclement weather.

VIEWPOINT: St. Nick Day reminds: embrace the meaningful
Nicholas Day is tomorrow. This is traditionally the day children receive small presents in the shoes they left out in the hallway the evening before. It is in commemoration of St. Nick, a wealthy man who lived in the village. On this day of the year, he would pass by the windows of poor children and toss a small bag of coins into their shoes, to be found and relished in the morning. These gifts were a tiny precursor to Christmas, a mere 19 days in the future, and a reminder that the festive season was nearly upon them.
