More than 20 customers narrowly escaped injury Saturday after a minivan slammed through the façade of Dorothy Ann Bakery.

Steve Conway, who owns the bakery with his wife Joan, was there at the time of the crash. He said a customer was backing into a parking spot when he accidentally stepped on the minivan’s accelerator instead of the brake.

“It basically burst into the building,” Conway said of the crash, which occurred at about 11:15 a.m..

The impact sent the vehicle into an area of the building that was playing host to a wedding cake tasting event, with about 20-25 people standing there, he said. Conway said he was just a couple feet from the impact area.

“Fortunately there were no injuries that we’re aware of,” he said, adding that there were a total of about 50 people inside the business at the time. “We’re fortunate.”

The bakery remains open for business, with a plywood fixture now sealing up the hole. Conway said he expects repairs to be completed in a couple months.
