Boys basketball: Woodbury advances, East Ridge falls in section quarterfinals

No. 2-seeded Woodbury, led by junior guard Matt Ambriz’s 22 points, beat the No. 7-seeded Mustangs 83-63 on Wednesday. The win advances the Royals (22-4) into the section semifinals, where they will face Mahtomedi. The No. 6-seeded Zephyrs beat third-seeded Tartan 69-55 Wednesday in their quarterfinal match.
Woodbury seniors Diallo Powell, Renard Suggs and Mario Franco recorded 15, 11 and 10 points against Mounds View, respectively.
Woodbury’s section semifinal game will be 6 p.m. Saturday at East Ridge High School.
Meanwhile, fellow District 833 school East Ridge was upset Wednesday in Section 3AAAA quarterfinal play by upstart Rosemount.
The No. 2-seeded Raptors (18-8) fell to the No. 7-seeded Irish 67-62 on East Ridge’s home court.
East Ridge’s Jake Knupp led all scorers with 20 points in the losing effort.
