Entering its triangular Thursday at Stillwater, Woodbury knew it would serve as a measuring stick.
Turns out the Royals measured up pretty well against some of their toughest section competitors after Woodbury defeated Stillwater 33-30 and Tartan 40-34.
The Royals got off to a quick start against the Ponies, who knocked them out of the Section 4AAA tournament last season, with three consecutive wins to start the dual. Stillwater built a 30-24 lead heading into the last two matches.
Anthony Doreo and Josh McClain came through with victories at 220 pounds and 285 pounds, respectively to seal the win for the Royals. Doreo earned a 9-4 decision over Haden Hausken and McClain pinned Ryan Peltier.
Austin Braun also had a big win at 113 pounds for Woodbury. Braun defeated fourth-ranked Christian Bahl 4-2 in overtime.
The Royals finished fourth Saturday at the Bloomington Kennedy tournament.
Woodbury beat Irondale 44-26, lost to No. 3 Prior Lake 66-6 and lost to Bloomington Kennedy 39-30.
Austin Braun, Ben Donnelly, Matt Delaney, Justin Herold-Plakut and John McNiff all went undefeated at the tournament.
Woodbury had two individuals qualify for the ninth-grade state tournament in Richfield.
Ben Malacko and Parker Field qualified for the Royals and they will wrestle Saturday at Champlin Park.
Woodbury will face White Bear Lake and South St. Paul Thursday.
