Letter to the editor: Writer’s attitude doesn’t bode well for cooperation

It’s frustrating to keep discussing national budgets, debt ceilings, spending limits when it feels like a cat chasing its tail. Democrats should stick with what they know best – taking care of the poor and let the Republicans handle the economy. If you would concede that, then you would have funds for needed programs.

But I’d like to simplify Ms. Denn’s point with a hypothetical. Based on your argument about the fiscal cliff you basically said that, we can’t cut spending until the economy is stabilized. Let’s bring that theory to the individual or family budget. So let’s say a person loses their job and can’t pay their mortgage or other bills. You would advise them not to cut back on expenses but to keep spending at the same level (because you say it is good for the economy) and on top of that, if possible, take out a couple of more credit cards and definitely max out the ones you already have, (which you are also having a hard time to pay now) because it wouldn’t be wise for the economy to stop spending. There is absolutely no logic to that theory of accounting. It is only when government learns to live within its means that the economy will improve. You can argue that a drop in spending will hurt, but it will only hurt in the short term, and the long-term benefits will be life-saving. 

Realistically, when interest rates rise and if congressmen get matched up in a primary, then they will start to take their responsibilities more seriously, truly looking out for the good of the American citizen instead of the giving into political pressure.
