The Woodbury boys swimming and diving team topped Park and White Bear Lake to earn second place in the Section 4AA True Team meet on Saturday, January 19.
At True Team meets, every competitor on every team scores points for his or her team. First place in individual events garners 16 points. A first-place relay team earns 32 points. The last place finisher in each individual event scores 1 point . In relays, the last-place team gets 2 points.
Woodbury scored 548 points in the meet to earn second out of the four teams competing. Stillwater (747 points) won the meet. Park (394) was a distant third.
Woodbury’s top event of the meet was the 200-yard individual medley. The Royals scored 49 points in the event. Freshman Brady Bennett won the race with a time of 2 minutes, 6.56 seconds for 16 points. Also, freshman Garrett Norsten took fourth (2:09.84) for 13 points, junior Eric Westfall placed sixth (2:10.76) for 11 points and eighth grader Eric Fong earned eighth (2:20.64) and an additional 9 points for the Royals.
Also, the Royals totaled 48 points in the 100-yard breaststroke. Woodbury freshman William Ho won the race with a time of 1:03.71. Norsten took third (1:07.40), Fong was fourth (1:11.09) and senior Andrew Peterson placed 12th (1:18.85).
In addition, individually, Woodbury freshman Williams Tostenson placed second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.41 and was second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:04.48 to give the Royals 30 points total from the events on his own. Also, in the 500 free, Bennett took fourth (5:12.80). Westphal led the way in the 100-yard breaststroke for the Royals with a fourth-place time of 1:00.30. Henning and Khazanovich finished sixth and seventh, respectively, with times of 23.76 and 24.26 in the 50-yard freestyle for 21 points. Khazanovich was also third in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.05 and Henning was also sixth in the 100-yard freestyle (53.43). Also, Burns was eighth in the 100 free (54.25).
Woodbury ninth-grader Ian Carr placed sixth in the diving competition for 11 points. Eighth grader Tyler Long, freshman Nick Gartner and eighth grader Mark Spannbauer took eighth, ninth and 12th, respectively, with scores of 230.10, 221.40 and 197.30 for another 22.5 combined points in the event.
Woodbury also fared well in the relay events.
The Woodbury 200-yard medley relay team of Westfall, Ho, Khazanovich and Henning placed second in the event for 30 points. Also, the Royals team of Ehle, Norsten, Moen and Renning earned sixth place for another 22 points. Woodbury’s Burns, Khazanovich, Bennett and Henning also placed second in the 200-yard freestyle relay, with a time of 1:34.67. The team of Kristopher Renning, Fong, Eric Fleming and Tostenson earned sixth in the same event (1:41.55). In the 400-yard free relay, Woodbury finished back-to-back, in fourth and fifth place.
Prior to the True Team meet, Woodbury fell to SEC-leader and third-ranked East Ridge 128-58 on Thursday, Jan. 17, at Woodbury Middle School.
East Ridge took first place in each event, first and second in seven events and first, second and third in one event.
For Woodbury, the 200-yard medley relay team of Bennett, Westfall, Norsten and Tostenson took second in the event with a time of 1:52.0. Tostenson also took second in the 200-yard individual medley relay (2:14.05), Henning placed second in the 100 fly (1:01.03), Norsten was second in the 500 free (5:13.08) and Carr placed second in the diving competition with a 145.80.
Next, Woodbury travels to SEC foe Forest Lake on Thursday, Jan. 24. The meet starts at 6 p.m.
