A new sandwich shop plans to bring some East Coast flavor to the Midwest.
Jersey Mike’s, a franchise with three other locations in Minnesota, will open at the Shoppes of Woodbury Village, said Tim Quiring, director of operations for the state’s Jersey Mikes stores.
Brian Risch, owner of the Woodbury franchise, said he’s never had anything like a Jersey Mike’s sub before.
“We’re slicing it right in front of you, the bread is fresh as fresh can be,” he said. “Jersey Mike’s has its own special, I call it … Jersey flair to the sandwich.”
The shop is equipped with cases for meats and cheeses that are sliced fresh to order.
“We’re a true deli style sandwich shop,” Quiring said. “That’s the first thing that’s ultimately unique to the sub world.”
Jersey Mike’s will go into a vacant, 1,400 square foot spot at the Shoppes of Woodbury Village next door to Cold Stone Creamery.
Risch signed up to become a franchise owner of three Jersey Mike’s stores, two of which will be located in Woodbury, he said.
“We think Woodbury is a two-store market,” he said, adding that he wants to give residents of the east side access to the subs as well.
Risch, a Woodbury resident, plans to get involved in the community by sponsoring events, working with athletic coaches and schools, as well as making donations to the police and fire departments.
“I’ve got a whole list,” he said.
Excited to get going on store No. 1, Risch will soon start construction on Jersey Mike’s with plans to open in April.
Jersey Mike’s is known for making sandwiches and salads “Mike’s way,” he said, with an oil, vinegar and special seasoning dressing as opposed to a creamy sauce.
When he and his wife, a New Jersey native, tried Jersey Mike’s subs together, the sandwiches were a reminder of what it would be like to be back on the East Coast.
“My wife is actually the one who fell head over heels in love with it,” he said. “It felt like we were out at the Jersey Shore having sandwiches on a nice summer day. Absolutely delicious.”
Jersey Mike’s will also have Philly subs made to order, wraps and “subs in a tub,” which are salads for the carb conscious.
The Woodbury location joins others in St. Anthony, Coon Rapids and Mankato.
“I wouldn’t be doing this if I didn’t believe in the product,” Risch said.
